Switching Phones? Follow This Checklist

The transition goes much more smoothly when you’re prepared.

Upgrading to a new device is always exciting. Straight Talk can help make the transition from your old one to your new one quick and easy. But to make it even more seamless, there are a few things you should do on your end first. So, before you ditch your old phone for good, keep this checklist in mind.

Step 1: Back up everything

Most of the time, you’ll get to bring everything from your old phone to your new one. This includes contacts, photos, and text messages. But, be aware that there is a risk and some things could get mixed up in the transfer process. Not to mention, if you’re switching to a new operating system (for example, going from iPhone to Android), that risk increases because the two separate systems are not always compatible.

One of the best ways to back up your stuff is to use cloud storage. Some phones come with a built-in cloud feature. If yours doesn’t, you can always use a third party storage app. Upload all your photos, documents, and anything else you want saved. If you have any special text messages or voicemails you want to keep, make sure you back those up, too.

Step 2: Manage your passwords

When you get a new phone and download all your favorite apps, you have to sign back into them. However, it’s nearly impossible to remember all your passwords. That’s why it might be a good idea to start using a password manager app, like LastPass. It stores usernames and passwords for all your accounts. And when you go to log back into your apps on your new device, LastPass will auto fill the information for you.

Step 3: Update your two-factor authentication

Do you have two-factor authentication enabled for any of your accounts? Plan ahead accordingly. Make sure you divert any security codes to your new phone, especially if you have a new phone number, before you say goodbye to your old one. Otherwise, you might get locked out of your accounts and have a harder time trying to get in.

Step 4: Trade in your old phone

Once everything is all set, take advantage of Straight Talk’s Trade-In Program. Send us your old phone, and we’ll send you cash in return. You can appraise your phone online to help you get a better idea of what to expect. Before you send it in though, you might want to factory reset it first and clear all your personal data from it.
